1948 Jean-Raymond Denault is newly graduated from HEC Montreal business school and from l’École des sciences économiques et politiques of Université de Montréal. Following a visit at the Library of Congress, he decides to create the Canadian Microfilming Society with some classmates. He rapidly gets involved with newspapers and concludes partnerships with Publishers to microfilm their collections. Several years later Jean-Raymond buys back his partners’ stocks and pursues his dream in solo.

1969 Publication of th first Edition of our Catalogue of Newspapers, Rare Books and Manuscripts on microfilm.

1978 On December 18 1978, Jean-Raymond Denault, is granted the Order of Canada, for his outstanding contribution to regional history.


1985 Publication of the Catalogue’s 3rd Edition. At this time, the archived newspaper collection counts an astounding 15 million pages that go back as far as 1764 with the Quebec Gazette/Gazette de Quebec. Must be added: rare books, manuscripts, notary public’s indices and repertories from the Montreal area and jewish newspapers published worldwide.

1988 Louis-Charles BA (Classics) et MA (Philosophy), Thérèse and Jean-Raymond’s son, After a few year’s in Education, comes back to the family business and eventually takes over. His expertise and experience give SOCAMI a new impulse.

2005 SOCAMI purchases a first high speed microfilm scanner and gradually develops a local and international clientele.

2006 Amélie, Louis-Charles’ daughter and HEC graduate, also joins SOCAMI and brings her new knowledge into the family business. She renews the accounting system and works on a new image for SOCAMI.

2009 The Canadian Microfilm Society officially adopts a new name SOCAMI Inc., abreviation of Société canadienne du microfilm Inc. Easier to use in the new internet era.Socami gets to scan many newspapers on microfilm from its collection and partners on various projects involving Historical Societies, Publishers, Libraries, researchers and public or private organizations.

2010 Socami enters into its sixth decade and adopts a un new logo qui that reflects both its original relation to long term preservation microfilm, and easy access to archived documents on digital form. In a newly designed web site, Socami confirms it is well on the way of meeting with new challenges! Since 1948, image quality and quality control have always been our core business. Although the business environment has changed, Socami SOCAMI has adapted to new technologies, and kept on to its values and mission based on respect for its customers, employees and preservation of our newspapers and archives. Its commitment to its clients remained the same.
